Cancellation of Apprentices for Failure to Attend In-School Training

A class call is made to a registered apprentice to attend in-school training either by the public training institution or by the Department.

If the apprentice refuses to attend class or withdraws from school after class starts, the Industrial Training Section, in cooperation with the institution, will develop and record a list of registered apprentices who refuse to attend in-school training.

A Notice of Mandatory Attendance will be forwarded to the apprentice by the Industrial Training Section advising he/she that the next class call requires in-school attendance.

Once a second class call is made to a registered apprentice to attend in-school training and the apprentice again refuses to attend class without just cause, a Notice of Cancellation will be issued by the Industrial Training Section.

The apprentice has 30 days to react to the Notice of Cancellation. This response is then reviewed by a Program Development Officer, who may grant a third class call and notify the training institution or finalize the cancellation process in the absence of a valid argument against cancellation.

An apprentice may submit a request to have his/her apprenticeship reactivated to the Division. Once reactivated, apprentices will be permitted to return to in-school training but are expected to keep the Record of Occupational Progress up-to-date during the period of cancellation to ensure proper credit re-assessment.
