Modified Prescribed Courses

The grids of outcomes which follow are excerpted from the corresponding curriculum guides. These grids are intended only to help facilitate the record keeping regarding modified prescribed courses. They are never to be used in isolation from the teaching and learning strategies and the assessment suggestions provided by the curriculum guide. Any decision to move a student to a modified prescribed course must be a product of collaboration and consultation between classroom/subject teacher, instructional resource teacher (IRT), a content specialist such as a department head, and others as necessary.

Whenever a prescribed course is considered for modification, care must be taken to maintain the integrity of the original course. Decisions regarding the outcomes to be changed, deleted, or added should be reached by the classroom/subject teacher responsible for the prescribed version of the course – who is also responsible for the delivery and evaluation of the modified prescribed version – in consultation with an IRT familiar with the student and the extent and impact of his or her exceptionality.

In order for the course to be considered modified prescribed, the amount of specific curriculum outcomes deleted or significantly changed must not exceed 50% and no strand or General Curriculum Outcome may be omitted. Since not all outcomes carry the same weight, determining whether the big ideas of the course are intact requires much deeper consideration than merely counting the numbers of outcomes changed or deleted. An educator with in-depth knowledge of the course under consideration must weigh the impact of any changes. When in doubt about whether the intent and the integrity of the provincially prescribed course has been maintained following modification of the outcomes, consult with the district level program specialist responsible for that particular curriculum area.
