Health Disorder

Definition

Medical conditions not specified elsewhere may also impact on the student's functioning. Examples would include a heart condition, Tourette's syndrome, hemophilia, anemia, cancer, sensory processing disorder, and cystic fibrosis where the effects of the condition (attention ability, energy level, physical limitations etc.) adversely affect a student's educational performance.

Services

Students who have been diagnosed with a health disorder by a medical professional may require a range of school based services depending on need and level of functioning. A comprehensive assessment is required to inform program planning. The exception to this requirement is a situation where a student is undergoing short term treatment which may temporarily affect the student's learning, functioning and/or attendance. Programming decisions are made by the student's program planning team. Program needs may vary according to the student's immediate health status.
